Windows 11 reignites the longstanding war between Apple and Microsoft

Updated: Sep 3, 2021

The old but longstanding war between Apple and Microsoft reignited with the launch of Windows 11. On Thursday, Microsoft’s chief executive officer, Satya Nadella, announced the launch of the new software describing its app store as an open platform.

In recent months, Apple has been criticized for its restrictive measures against content creators on the IOS app store citing privacy protection and cybersecurity. Epic Games for example is one of the creators that faced limits on the app store. Also, Microsoft has been critical of the limits on Apple’s app store seeing it as hampering its booming video game business.

According to Nadella, Windows 11 is a customer-centric and an open platform giving freedom to content creators on the app store. Microsoft partnered with Amazon to bring the e-commerce giant’s version of Google Android apps to Windows 11 users.

The launch of Windows 11 comes in a time when both companies are positioning themselves for an impeding battle over augmented reality and virtual reality as this market is seen as the next major frontier in computing.
