Competition for tech workers heats up as Amazon creates 1,800 jobs in Canada

Updated: Jun 13, 2021

The race for tech workers gets stiffer as companies announce hiring plans in Canada this year. Amazon announced that it plans to hire 1,800 new corporate and technology employees in its Vancouver and Toronto tech hubs in 2021.

The news came after a global IT giant ,Mphasis Ltd, announced that it will create 500 to 1,000 jobs in the next two to three years in Calgary. Shopify, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Twitter, and Pinterest have all announced hiring plans this year.

There are more than 1,500 currently available jobs on amazon.jobs for various IT positions as well as sales and marketing executives.

In the wake of criticism around Amazon’s working conditions, the company will spend US$ 12 million to launch a new workplace safety initiative in the United States with the National Safety Council that will address a warehouse-injury rate that surpasses that of it competitors.
