Apple pledges $1 billion for a new engineering hub in North Carolina

Updated: May 22, 2021

Apple Inc said it will open a research hub in North Carolina as part of an increased commitment to investing domestically. The company said it will create 3,000 new jobs at the new campus in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and software engineering.

The California-based technology giant will spend $1 billion in the area around Raleigh-Durham and Chapel Hill, which is considered the research triangle in North Carolina and home to other technology companies such as IBM, Cisco Systems Inc., and GlaxoSmithKline PLC. Apple’s new hub will be the company’s first campus on the U.S. east coast and will attract top talent. The expansion to the east coast will allow the tech giant to take advantage of more diverse workforces and investment incentives.

Silicon Valley has become less appealing for engineering talent because of the relatively higher cost of living. In addition to the talent, Apple is searching for a place where it is cheaper to do business.

The expansion comes as part of Apple’s planned 20% increase in U.S. investments over the next five years which the company announced on Monday. The initiative will allocate $430 billion in direct spending on U.S.-based suppliers, data center investments, capital expenditures in the U.S., and other projects. Additionally, these efforts will result in 20,000 new jobs in different U.S. cities.
